CAN you Food Fight Results

During the week of December 5th-December 9th, students at Westside held their annual fundraiser for a local food bank (Community Action.)   For the last six years, Westside has held a Penny War to raise money for the food bank, however, student council members chose to do a food drive instead.  The student council members from sixth grade, met on several occasions to come up with a fun way to get students to bring in food.  They named the fundraiser, "CAN you Food Fight?".  The food drive was essentially a competition between grade-levels, and an overall incentive was given to see who could bring in the most.  One point was awarded to every classroom for each canned item they brought in.  There were, however, certain food items that could be used to "bomb" other classrooms and negate points.  Peanut butter, tuna fish, and macaroni and cheese (several food items the food banks need) took away up to five points away from the class score.
 
An overall goal of 2,000 cans was made by the student council, however this goal was achieved after the second day.  So, they made a new goal of 5,000 cans of food.  When all was said and done, a total of over 6,500 items of food were brought in for the food bank.  Student council members spent hours collecting and sorting the food into boxes and bins which lined the hallways of Westside,-indeed an overwhelming sight.  Many students commented on how amazed they were that one school could bring in so much food.
 
Melina Wright, a student council member said, "I liked the bombing and competing against other classes.  The best part was helping the people that need it and having fun at the same time.  Madi Poulsen, a sixth-grader, enjoyed the food drive because, "We are helping the food bank in a big way."
