Charlene Hall, a first-grade teacher at Westside, received the Crystal Apple Award on Monday, November 5th.  Teresa Jordan, facilitator at Westside, presented Charlene with this prestigious award.  This award is peer-nominated and given to recognize excellence in teaching.  Charlene has been teaching for nine years, all of which have been in first grade.  When asked about why she likes to teach, she talks about her love of the students.  She loves their hugs and the idea that everything is new to them.  She is the one that gets to teach them how to be students.  Some of her reasons for teaching first grade are because of the perception of the world that the first graders have, and their exhuberance for life and learning which becomes evident through their writing. "Writing is my most favorite because they say the funniest things!"

Being the seasoned teacher she is, Charlene has some wonderful advice to new teachers, as well as to teachers in general.  "You don't have to be perfect!  We are all continually learning and progressing because things constantly change."

Charlene lives in Orem with her husband and daughter.  Her son lives in Springville. People might question whether or not she actually lives in Orem, because most of the time you will find her at Westside late into the evening, and early in the morning.

Congratulations to Charlene!  We are privileged to have an exemplary teacher and friend here at Westside.
