This year we have a chart in our school where kids can write their names if they are caught doing something particularly great. When all 100 are filled, a group of them is chosen at random, and those kids are invited to an ice-cream party. We recently had our first party and want to congratulate all of the kids who were chosen!
First grade is going awesome! They have almost reached their goal! Come on 5th and 6th grade. You can do it! Don't miss the chance to get pie in your teachers' faces.
CHALK FEST! One of our very favorite things is Chalk Fest! Registration is $15 dollars and you get your own box of sidewalk chalk and a portion of sidewalk to show off your artistic skills!
The PTA will be there with candy, music and a camera to take a picture of you with your artwork for a special display!
Yesterday the fifth graders went to the power plant and had a "shockingly" good time! They were able to tour various parts of the power plant, watch demonstrations, and explore the tools and systems that are used there.
This week the 6th grade students learned how and why we have seasons. Using an ohm meter, they measured the amount of heat reaching different parts of the earth at different points in its' revolution around the sun. They were able to see that the northern and southern hemispheres receive different amounts of heat, and therefore have opposite seasons.
Last week US Synthetic sent several of their employees to Westside for the morning to work with 6th graders on problem solving. The students worked together in teams to build towers out of notecards over three successive tries, learning in between about what it means to think, plan, revise, and not give up.

Sixth graders explored the moon phases to discover the reason why we have different moon phases. This was a great STEM activity.
