Taxation Without Representation

Submitted by arlene.haymond on

My class learned about how unfair taxation without representation was for the colonists. Although the colonists all started out with 10 pieces of candy, by the time King Sam kept taxing them for ridiculous things, (Oh, you have a pet? That will cost you. You have blue eyes? Pay up!), his tax collectors had just about emptied most of their pockets. Poor colonists. But the King made out great!

Mayflower Challenge

Submitted by arlene.haymond on
Fourth graders in Mrs. Boyer's class participated in the Mayflower STEM challenge.  They created mini Mayflowers out of foil, an index card, popsicle stick, toothpicks, and tape.  They tested their designs to see which boat could hold the most "pilgrims" while floating.

"The Scarecrow" by Beth Ferry and The Fan Brothers

Submitted by arlene.haymond on

These second graders read a tender and affectionate tale that reminded them of the comforting power of friendship, and the joy of helping others.

The story sparked them to be creative using math, science, procedural writing, drama, and art.  After drawing, measuring, and writing their procedures, they made a nest for a baby crow (a character in the story).  They figured out how to make it 3-D and added a baby crow so they could hang them on the wall.
