African Dancers visit UEI
After performing for the school, the African dancers visited the students in the UEI unit. The dancers interacted one-on-one with the students there, and even shared some dance moves.

Recently, African drummers/dancers performed for Westside students and faculty. A highlight of the program was when the teachers were invited to join in a dance on stage.
The day before Thanksgiving break, students were given the opportunity to participate in the annual Turkey Trot during lunch recess. For each lap students walked or ran, they were presented with a drawing tickety that would later be used for a prize drawing. Mrs. Jordan, and Mrs. Matis braved the cold to pass out tickets to the students as they completed their laps.
Shannon Arroyo, a third grade teacher here at Westside (pictured far right), was recently awarded the Crystal Apple Award. This is an award which is given to teachers who are nominated by their peers for excellence in teaching. Karen Thomas, along with Craig Harvey from the Horace Mann Agency, presented Shannon with this award. Shannon currently works in the dual immersion program at Westside, and is a great asset to the school.
Recently, several sixth grade students were able to showcase their soccer skills in a match against several faculty members. Mr. Fox, a fifth grade teacher, organized an intramural program where students may come in during lunch recess, and participate in a variety of sports. For the first part of the school year, the focus has been on soccer.
In November, Westside fourth grade students were able to see a performance from the Utah Symphony.
Parents came to see their students decked out in Halloween costumes during the annual Halloween parade at Westside.
During Red Ribbon Week, Nebo School District Superintendent Rick Nielson made a welcomed visit to Westside. He not only visited each of the classrooms, but provided a scrumptious breakfast for the teachers. Teachers enjoyed the opportunity to visit with him.
During the week of October 27th-31st, students at Westside were able to celebrate the importance of remaining drug free. The theme this year was, “WE HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN DRUGS” On Monday, students remembered to 'Follow their Dreams' and wore pajamas. Tuesday was to remember to 'Stay in the Game' where students wore team/sports attire. On Wednesday the theme focuse on not getting 'mixed up on drugs' where students could where mismatched socks and shoes.
Last month, Westside student council members attended leadership workshops at BYU. They learned about the importance of being effective leaders, and good examples to other students in the school. Westside's student council has opportunities throughout the school year to serve. They even organize a fundraiser in December to raise money for a local food bank.
