4th Grade Program

Last week, fourth graders performed their program for parents and students in the school.  Part of the fourth-grade curriculum involves the study of Utah history.  The program focused on some of prominent points of Utah alphabetically.  Students were donned in attire from cowboys and indians, to pioneers.

Egypt Fair at Westside

The sixth-grade students at Westside recently showcased projects they constructed for a culminating event of their study of Egypt.  Student projects ranged from constructing pyramids to re-enacting the process of mummification.  Younger students, as well as parents, were amazed with the caliber of the projects, and knowledge these sixth graders possessed.

Drug Awareness Assembly

Students at Westside Elementary were privileged to see some very unique bike stunts from the father and son team of the Webber Family of Minnesota. As this father and son team performed tricks, they also educated the students in bike safety and talked about the importance of staying drug free to be able to accomplish goals in life.  Later in the program, a couple of teachers were called to the center of the gym where they participated in a scary bike stunt where one of the bikers jumped the bike over them.  It was an amazing and entertaining assembly.

Turkey Gobble-Off

Before Thanksgiving break, representatives from each class at Westside were chosen to participate in the annual Turkey Gobble Contest.  Some of "gobble" sounds sounded very realistic, where others were not so realistic.  The above students were chosen as the overall winners.

4H Performance Evening

Recently, students who signed up for 4H programs at Westside were able to show parents, family and friends what they have learned the last couple of months.  4H programs offered through Westside included a volleyball class, bell choir, arts and crafts, Spanish class, etc.  A new session of 4H classes will begin on November 26th.

Indoor Soccer Faculty Vs. Sixth-Grade Students

On November 2nd, several sixth-grade students participated in an indoor soccer game against a group of faculty members from Westside.  Mr. Fox, a fifth-grade teacher, works with students during intramural games at recess time, to improve their athletic skills in a certain sport.  Students have the opportunity to sign up for intramurals at the beginning of each term.

Charlene Hall receives the Crystal Apple Award

Charlene Hall, a first-grade teacher at Westside, received the Crystal Apple Award on Monday, November 5th.  Teresa Jordan, facilitator at Westside, presented Charlene with this prestigious award.  This award is peer-nominated and given to recognize excellence in teaching.  Charlene has been teaching for nine years, all of which have been in first grade.  When asked about why she likes to teach, she talks about her love of the students.  She loves their hugs and the idea that everything is new to them.  She is the one that gets to teach them how to be students.

Halloween Fun at Westside

On October 31st, students, staff and faculty at Westside celebrated Halloween with a variety of activities.  Earlier in the day, many classes celebrated the day with classroom parties and games.  Later in the afternoon, every class participated in the annual Halloween parade.  Parents were invited to watch the parade that took place outside on the playground area.
