Making Comets

Hospital volunteers, in an effort to promote physical fitness and the importance of a healthy diet, passed out free jump ropes to students after lunch.
On April 25th, Kindergarten, first, and second-grade students enrolled in the Dual Immersion program, participated in a program presentation entirely in Spanish. Students sang songs and performed cultural dances for students, teachers and parents.
Last week, sixth-grade students who were completely caught up on assignments, participated in a fun water day activity. Periodically throughout the year, teachers reward the students who are caught up, with fun activities to help with motivation.
Recently, fourth-grade students at Westside had a special presentation to learn about various geological concepts. The on-hands experiments and demonstrations made it a fun science day.
Mrs. Couch, a third-grade teacher at Westside, recently took the time to share her own connection to World War II with a group of sixth-grade students. Mrs. Couch shared how her Japanese-American heritage was affected due to several of the events that occurred during the war.
Last week, students in sixth grade had the opportunity to participate in the annual Hershey Track meet at Springville High School. Although the weather was quite chilly, the students and teachers braved the weather....until the downpour of rain. Fortunately, by the time the serious weather conditions set in, the running events were completed.
On Friday, April 6th, fifth-graders at Westside performed their class program. The program focused on the United States, and some of the iconic events and culture that have shaped United States in the last 100 years. Some of the songs performed included Hound Dog by Elvis, and Puttin' on the Ritz.
In a collaborative effort between PTA and Westside Faculty, students at Westside were recently given the red-carpet treatment for reading. Students who achieved their reading goal for the first part of March, were given the opportunity to see a magic show. At this same event, baskets centered around a book theme, were displayed as a part of the silent auction. All proceeds from the night will be directed toward technology improvement in the school.
Last week, sixth-grade students at Westside visited Springville Junior High school for an orientation. Students were given information on registration, and led on a tour of the school by student council members there.
