Red Ribbon Week October 24-27

Mrs. Matis, principal at Westside, dresses in her 60's attire during Red Ribbon Week.  The theme of the day was, "Drugs are out of style."  Each day of the week students are encouraged to dress up according to different anti-drug themes, and hope it reminds them to stay drug free.

Moldy Jello?

Students in sixth grade recently learned how mold grows the best, and what it needs to survive.  Each class inoculated cups with jello in them, with mold.  They placed these cups in warm, cold, dark, and light places.  After a few days the students made their observations. 

6th Grade Teachers vs. 6th Grade Students in indoor soccer

On October 7th, sixth-grade students played a rousing game of indoor soccer against several of the teachers.  Intramural sports are offered to 5th and 6th grade students during their lunch recess time.  At the end of each intramural session, students have the opportunity to use the skills they have learned to play against their teachers.

Preschool Happenings

Mari Kadish, preschool teacher at Westside Elementary, demonstrates how to use the listening center.  Students listen to the story as they read along in their own copy of the book.

LaMarque Ward Assembly

Recently, upper-grade students at Westside Elementary were privileged to hear from LaMarque Ward and other gues speakers.  LaMarque Ward is a former professional basketball player and is the founder of the Cincinnati Dream Academy, a youth athletics organization that teaches basketball skills and character development to at-risk youth.  He and his team talked about how we can pursue our dreams and goals and what it takes to accomplish them.

6th Grade Visits the Christa McAuliffe Space Center

Sixth grade students at Westside Elementary recently visited the Christa McAuliffe Space Center in Pleasant Grove.  Students participated in a flight simulation where they were presented with various challenges to overcome.  After the flight simulation, the students learned about concepts related to the sixth grade science core curriculum including gravity and the solar system.  Pictured is a teacher demonstrating the effects of gravity on the "fabric of space."

Westside Open House

Come and meet your teacher, tour the school, and get ready for the new school year!  Friday, August 19th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.  Don't forget, school begins on August 22nd for 1-6th grades!  We can't wait to see you!
