Recently Miss Balli won an award from the faculty for all of her amazing service to Westside. In the two years that she has been here, Miss Balli has made a tremendous difference. She is kind and caring to students and helps them strive to do their best. She is also incredibly supportive to the teachers, helping them in whatever ways they need. Westside will greatly miss her next year, but we are so excited for Miss Balli in her appointment as principal at Meadow Brook!
Last Friday our Kindergarten students graduated! During their graduation they talked and sang songs about things that they have learned this year. Each student was then presented for graduation. We look forward to seeing all of our Kindergarteners next year as first graders!
Last week the sixth graders were visited by the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium. The kids learned about ecosystems and the animals that inhabit them, and were able to see and touch some of those animals, including a hedgehog, a cockroach, and armadillo, and a boa constrictor.
Each year the faculty of Westside Elementary chooses one classified employee (an employee who is not a teacher) as Employee of the Year, sponsored by Horace Mann. This year Mr. Poulson, our school custodian was chosen. Mr. Poulson is a wonderful custodian! He is caring and kind, and does all that he can to help both teachers and students. Whether it be moving furniture, getting balls down from the roof, or tirelessly cleaning the lunchroom each day, Mr. Poulson is always there, with a smile on his face. We are so grateful to have Mr. Poulson working at Westside!
This year marks the second year of Mr. Lovell’s “Pennies For Peace” reading marathon. During the reading marathon students had family members, friends, and neighbors pledge to donate a certain amount of pennies for each minute that they read during a one week period. Students then did their part by reading for multiple hours each day.
On Friday of last week the first graders put on a wonderful program, all about their love of literacy. They recited poetry and sang songs about their favorite books, including Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!, Frog and Toad, and Dr. Seuss. Great job first graders!
Mr. Fox, one of our amazing fifth grade teachers, has taught at Westside for 30 years. Sadly, this will be his last year, as he is retiring. Last week we had a retirement party to celebrate with friends, family, co-workers, students, and former students. Thank you Mr. Fox, for all of your years of wonderful service!
Today the fourth grade classes put on a fantastic program all about Utah. They highlighted some of Utah's history, sang about the counties, and performed a square dance. It was wonderful to learn about Utah through song and dance!
