On Friday the sixth grade students went on a field trip to Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City. While there they were able to explore interactive exhibits and then visit the dome theater where they watched a presentation about constellations and a film about Saturn. The students loved seeing and learning more about topics that they learned about earlier this year!
On Friday the fifth grade classes went on a field trip to the Utah State Capitol to learn more about the legislative session. They were able to visit the House and Senate galleries to watch the proceedings, and then met with some of our local representatives to learn more about the law-making process.
On Wednesday the author Lance Conrad came to talk with the sixth grade classes about writing. He talked about the writing process and the important components of a good book. The students enjoyed hearing about his history as a writer and what he has done with his career.
On Tuesday several sixth grade classes at Westside were fortunate to have a guest lecturer, Dr. Allphin, a professor at Brigham Young University, come and present about ecology. One of the sixth grade science strands is ecosystems, so hearing from Dr. Allphin was the perfect segue into the new unit. The students learned about ecological relationships, the food chain, and the role the environment plays in the food chain.
