Students at Westside were rewarded for their diligent reading. All students who met their reading goal, participated in a series of Minute to Win It games. These games ranged from how fast it took to eat a piece of licorice, to whether or not a student could keep a feather afloat in the air.
Westside sixth-grade students mummified chickens as part of their unit on Egypt. Students, under the direction of sixth-grade teacher Annie McKee, are scheduled to come in every week to take part in the mummification process.
Students and faculty at Westside Elementary celebrated Halloween ion Monday. Part of the Halloween festivities involved a performance from the Westside choir and bell choir. Later in the afternoon, all teachers and students participated in a Halloween parade outside to showcase some of the amazing costumes.
Last week, membersof the ComedySportz company entertained students at Westside. ComedySportz is a hilarious audience interactive-comedy competition between two teams of comedians, who perform a series of scenes The assembly was part of Red Ribbon Week to remind students to stay away from drugs.
The fourth grade at Westside Elementary enjoyed a fabulous fall day hiking to Timp Caves!
Mrs. Matis, principal at Westside, dresses in her 60's attire during Red Ribbon Week. The theme of the day was, "Drugs are out of style." Each day of the week students are encouraged to dress up according to different anti-drug themes, and hope it reminds them to stay drug free.
Students in sixth grade recently learned how mold grows the best, and what it needs to survive. Each class inoculated cups with jello in them, with mold. They placed these cups in warm, cold, dark, and light places. After a few days the students made their observations.
On October 7th, sixth-grade students played a rousing game of indoor soccer against several of the teachers. Intramural sports are offered to 5th and 6th grade students during their lunch recess time. At the end of each intramural session, students have the opportunity to use the skills they have learned to play against their teachers.
