On Friday of last week the first graders put on a wonderful program, all about their love of literacy. They recited poetry and sang songs about their favorite books, including Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!, Frog and Toad, and Dr. Seuss. Great job first graders!

Mr. Fox, one of our amazing fifth grade teachers, has taught at Westside for 30 years. Sadly, this will be his last year, as he is retiring. Last week we had a retirement party to celebrate with friends, family, co-workers, students, and former students. Thank you Mr. Fox, for all of your years of wonderful service!

Today the fourth grade classes put on a fantastic program all about Utah. They highlighted some of Utah's history, sang about the counties, and performed a square dance. It was wonderful to learn about Utah through song and dance!

Orchestra Concert

This morning the 6th grade orchestra put on a concert for the fifth and sixth grade classes. Between playing the songs, students explained what each of the instruments in the orchestra are and demonstrated their sound. Several students also talked about why they enjoy being in orchestra, and encouraged the fifth graders to join next year. The kids did a fantastic job with their concert!

Yesterday the fifth graders participated in their annual track meet at Springville High School. The weather was chilly but the kids ran hard (and long jumped and threw softballs as well!) and everyone had a great time!

Summer Coding Workshop open to 6th graders

This summer we are sponsoring two 2-day coding classes for current 6th-8th graders.  Could you please help spread the word to students and parents at your school?  I have attached a Google Doc that could be used as a poster, copy and pasted as a PR story on your school website, linked through your school social media accounts, etc.  I am also attaching an image if you need to post that separately.  Thank you!

Fourth Grade Pioneer Day

Submitted by lindsey.smith on

Fourth graders enjoyed taking a step back in time last Friday at our pioneer day.  We trekked to the Civic Center park for a day of games and past times enjoyed by the pioneers.  Students learned to sew buttons, made rag dolls, hammered nails into wood, made buzz saw toys, and listened to tall tales, along with many other fun activities.  We ended the day by trekking back to school and making our own ice cream!  Students had a lot of fun living like pioneers for the day.
