March Madness Reading Challenge

Submitted by lindsey.smith on

During the month of March the students at Westside worked just a little bit harder than usual on their reading. This week we had several assemblies to honor such outstanding work. Each assembly was attended by two to three grade levels, and at each one names were drawn for kids to choose prizes or to shoot baskets, with money awarded for each basket scored. Three grand prize winners were also chosen to receive $50 savings bonds. We are so proud of all of our Westside kids who work hard to improve their reading and have fun with it each day!

Building America Music Assembly

This morning the kids at Westside were treated to a wonderful assembly put on by Marcia Knorr. The kids learned all about American history through music as the group played various instruments and sang songs that had to do with events such as the Gold Rush, the Civil War, and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. For each song one or two students also came up to help with the performance, and the rest of the students kept the beat or sang along. The assembly ended with a fun twist as two teachers were called up for the last song to portray a cowboy rounding up her steer.

Today all of the students in the third through sixth grades who are in the Spanish Immersion classes participated in a program for parents and students. Each grade performed a number, some singing in Spanish, and everyone dancing. As a finale, all four grades joined together to sing a beautiful song. Fantastic job to all of the kids who participated!

Each year the faculty of Westside vote on one teacher to win the Crystal Apple Award. This year, we chose Mrs. Jensen, one of our amazing second grade teachers. Mrs. Jensen is an incredible teacher. It is clear that she cares about her students and works hard to help them succeed. She also goes out of her way to make the faculty and staff feel supported and appreciated. She is sunshine in our school, and we are so grateful to have her!
