On January 9th, parent conferences were held at Westside. Many teachers, however, chose to do what are called "Walking Report Cards" which give the students the opportunity to showcase what they have learned, and demonstrate their knowledge of various concepts in certain subject areas.
The week students came back from the Christmas break, Westside held the annual Geography bee. Two students from every class had to win several rounds in order to progress to the school-wide level. The two top winners were Natalie Bourgeous, and Owen Ngaluafe. Owen was the finalist from Westside.
Recently, sixth grade students learned about Ancient Greece. As a finale to their unit, students participated in the Greek Olympics, where the students were broken up into teams from Sparta, Athens, Megara, and Corinth.
On Thursday, December 19th, the kindergarten classes performed their Christmas program for their parents and classmates at Westside. The performance involved many traditional Christmas songs with speaking parts from the students.
On Tuesday, December 17th, the Springville Junior High School Choir performed for Westside students. Many former Westside students were showcased in the performance. During a portion of the program, students from the audience were brought up to participate in an interactive Christmas song.
During the week of December 9th-13th, students at Westside Elementary participated in the Penny Wars. The Penny Wars were a way to raise funds through a school-wide competition. Each grade level competed by earning points, or bringing pennies. One point equaled one penny, whereas a dollar bill equaled 100 points. Other classes, however, could bring silver change to counteract the positive penny points. The sixth grade orchestra recently performed for parents at Westside. This year's group, the largest group ever, performed under the direction of Mandy Batholomew.
